Joy has been the ringleader of the emotions up until now, but Riley's life changes are starting to shake things up and Sadness has begun to take over. Riley's emotions are portrayed using colorful creatures inside her head. Riley is a light hearted little girl on the cusp of adolescence, approaching that turbulent age where everything changes and it seems like there is no one there to help you. The creators of this film truly remember what it was like to be a child and continue to express understanding to children's feelings today. Not only is it a whimsical, funny film, but the poetry is off the charts. I gave it a shot anyway and I didn't expect to love it-but it's depth absolutely shocked me.

Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters.
The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. I drew in eyebrows & then formed Sadness’ glasses out of pipe cleaners & glued them into place.Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. I used another paper plate as a template & cut the hair out of construction paper. I drew in eyeballs with magic markers & then glued the eyes into place. I cut white ovals out of construction paper to make the eyes. We painted peach for Joy, blue for Sadness, green for Disgust, purple for Fear & red for Anger. We painted 5 paper plates, one in the color of each character. Since she wanted us all to play our parts so badly, I thought that masks would be the most fun. It seemed only fitting that we made a craft inspired by it. All she could talk about the rest of the day was the movie. “Disgust, can I have some more juice please?” Even our dog Duke became a part of it.
She started calling me Disgust & calling her daddy Anger. When we got home she wanted to change into a green dress because Joy wore a green dress. When we were leaving Mai asked us if we could go again tomorrow. My husband even got a little choked up during it. I found myself crying through much of the movie.
As it turns out, I loved it too. It was full of emotion, which made sense since all of the characters were actual emotions, Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger & Disgust all played a part. I knew that our daughter would love it, but I had heard mixed reviews & was not sure how I would feel about it. She was so excited all morning & could hardly wait until we got there. She had been asking us to go all week & finally broke us down.
Yesterday we took our daughter to the movies to see ‘Inside Out’.
